DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR DUTIES

Under general supervision, the Fire Inspector will perform field work associated with the enforcement of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Safety Act, Code, and Regulations. Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Conducting inspections of buildings, structures, facilities, and life-hazard uses for compliance with the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code. • Inspecting high-rise buildings and other regulated occupancies in accordance with applicable inspection schedules. • Inspecting fire protection systems and equipment, including automatic fire suppression systems, fire alarm systems, standpipes, and related fire-safety features. • Evaluating means of egress, exit access, exit discharge, exit signs, emergency lighting, and other life-safety features. • Identifying existing and potential fire hazards and determining appropriate corrective measures. • Conducting re-inspections to determine whether identified violations have been corrected. • Preparing and issuing notices of violation, orders to abate, and other enforcement documents as authorized. • Assisting property owners, tenants, municipal officials, fire departments, and other stakeholders with questions concerning fire-code requirements and the correction of violations. • Maintaining accurate inspection records, photographs, reports, correspondence, and enforcement documentation. • Preparing clear and technically accurate inspection reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations. • Utilizing electronic inspection, records-management, and reporting systems.

Applicants must possess a valid Fire Inspector License issued by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, Division of Fire Safety, authorizing the individual to engage in enforcement of the New Jersey Fire Codes. Applicants who possess a valid Fire Official License issued by the Division of Fire Safety will also satisfy the Fire Inspector license requirement. Experience Applicants must possess four (4) years of experience in a field associated with the fire service or fire protection industry, including experience such as: • Fire inspection; • Fire protection system installation; • Fire protection subcode enforcement; • Fire prevention; • Fire service; or • Other directly related fire-protection experience. In accordance with the Civil Service job specification: • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in fire science or a related field may be substituted for the required four years of experience. • An Associate degree from an accredited college in fire science or a related field may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

A valid New Jersey driver's license will be required when operation of a motor vehicle is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
